Wilbur Wright 1867–1912
Aviation pioneer who, with Orville Wright, built and flew the first successful powered airplane. Born 1867.
Notes
Wilbur Wright was born on 16 April 1867 and died on 30 May 1912. The years on this Echo are 1867–1912. With his brother Orville Wright he built and flew the first successful powered airplane. That is the achievement already in the summary. The public record dates the first controlled, sustained flight of a powered heavier-than-air aircraft to 17 December 1903, in the machine known as the Wright Flyer. Later machines in the same series were the Wright Flyer II in 1904 and the Wright Flyer III in 1905, the last of them described as the first practical fixed-wing aircraft of the series. The brothers’ control insight was a three-axis system, so a pilot could steer and keep the aircraft in equilibrium. This sheet is Wilbur’s. Orville Wright has a separate Person Echo, linked below. The Wright Brothers Group Echo links this sheet with Orville’s. This note does not add a field or a town.
