The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House was fought in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, from 8 to 21 May 1864. It was the second major engagement of Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign, after the Wilderness, between the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee. The result was inconclusive. This Place Echo is the field. The county seat is a different Place. It is not a Relic and not a Chamber. NPS CWSAC VA048 treats the battle as a series of combats: Laurel Hill and Corbin's Bridge (8 May), the Ni and Po (9–10 May), the Salient or Bloody Angle (12–13 May), Piney Branch Church (15 May), Harrison House (18 May), Harris Farm (19 May). Those are not Places in this file. Casualty estimates differ by source; this sheet does not lock a number. Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park administers the ground today and is not a parent Place. Unit armament is not the definition of the field.
