Boles, known as Black Bart and also as Charles Bolton, was an English-born stagecoach robber. He was born about 1829. He was still living after 28 February 1888, and no year of death is stored here, because the death record is precise only to the century. He is not Bartholomew Roberts, the earlier pirate who was also called Black Bart. The English Wikipedia article says he was born in Norfolk, England, the third of ten children, and that his parents later farmed in Jefferson County, New York. He left short poems after two of his robberies. He worked in Northern California and Southern Oregon through the 1870s and 1880s. The portrait is a black-and-white copy of a photograph of unknown authorship. Wikimedia Commons places it in the public domain as a United States work whose copyright has expired.","years":"c. 1829–after 1888","place_hint":null,"tags":[],"verified":false,"public_publish":true,"primary_image_url":"https://media-vayati.s3.us-east-va.io.cloud.ovh.us/echoes/visages/f65a9ad7-398a-41e4-946e-0fe10c358121/37fb10a9ba5b4984944a.jpg","primary_image_type":"upload","is_placeholder":false,"image_is_placeholder":false,"created_at":"2026-10-31T06:52:43.633Z","updated_at":"2026-10-31T07:30:09.235Z","parent_place_echo_id":null,"place_grain":null,"external_links":{"primary":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Bart_(outlaw)","related":["https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Bowles_aka_Black_Bart.jpg"]},"nested_places":[],"parent_place":null}
